About Us
RainBowS Stained Glass
opened August 19, 2005. We occupy an old 19th century building which we are
trying to remodel a little at a time. We are located on the west end of Main
Street in beautiful, historic Madison, Indiana. We are a full service stained
glass retailer as well as a working studio. Rick and Sharon Collier are the
owners, and have one employee, their son Brent. Trying to decide upon a name
for a new business was difficult until we thought of the beautiful colors
available in art glass, rainbows. The word rainbows included the first initial
for all three of us...R for Rick, B for Brent, and S for Sharon. We knew we
found the right name for our business!
We got into stained glass
as a hobby, but it soon became our passion. We previously owned Glass
Unlimited, a commercial, residential retail window and door store, so after all
of our windows at home, our relatives windows got filled up with our stained
glass creations, we decided to begin to sell some of our work at Glass
Unlimited. When we started hanging our artwork in the windows we began having
inquiries about whether we were going to sell art glass, supplies, and tools.
That is how it all began. We started by adding a limited amount of glass and
supplies to our inventory. We continued to add our work to the windows. We
added more glass, more tools, more supplies. Someone asked, " Are you going to
teach classes?" Then someone else asked, and another, and then another. So, we
started teaching classes. We had a ball, and our students had fun while learning
a new craft.
As a matter of fact, we had
so much fun doing stained glass we decided to sell Glass Unlimited and open a
new store that focused solely on stained glass. Our son, Brent, had returned
from military service, and wanted to pursue a career in graphic design. We
introduced him to stained glass, and he excelled at it. He was a natural, and
continues to be a natural whether creating a new design, or choosing just the
right glass for a panel. Brent now helps with our classes, works as much as he
can while he continues his education at Indiana University Southeast as a fine
arts major with a focus on graphic design.
Now we are again teaching
classes in our new business. We have a large classroom with plenty of storage
room for our student's use. We try to keep our classes small. We like working
very closely with the students, and don't want to hold anyone back. Students
begin with a project they feel comfortable with. Some want to be severely
challenged, while others want to take a more limited approach when learning a
new craft. We believe that is the best way to learn, and try to base each
class towards the individual.
We also design and create
custom pieces of stained glass art for a wide variety of uses. We can
custom fit to windows, doors, sidelights, cabinets, furniture, etc. We can
design an original pattern, or adapt patterns to meet our client's particular
need. Once a design has been chosen, we can input information into our
computer using a program created specifically for the stained glass studio,
Glass Eye 2000. This
program enables us to use computer generated renderings of actual glass samples
from specific glass manufacturers. Now, each client will have a fairly accurate
representation of their commissioned project.
We offer a wide variety of
art glass, tools and supplies for the stained glass hobbiest or professional.
Handmade stained glass suncatchers and panels, as well as 3 D objects and lamps
are available to purchase in our store. Classes are available so others can
learn to create stained glass art. Studio time is available to those who just
need a place to work.
